With Mega Metagross as the axis, this team adopted three fixed core members that cover each other's weaknesses — a Dark/Dragon special attacker, a Water-type partner, and Hippowdon — designed to be able to face any team composition without trouble. The remaining two slots were finalized, after trial and error, as Gengar for checking Ghost types, and a Steel type to handle fast opponents in place of the Choice Scarf that the Dark/Dragon attacker gave up.
Instead of a Choice Scarf, the Dark/Dragon attacker is run as a same-type (STAB) + Swords Dance set that takes on the role of directly breaking down the opponent's stall/wall compositions, while Gengar is used as a bluff, hiding whether it has Mega Evolved to induce the opponent into making reckless switch decisions. Metagross's bulk distribution is tuned to withstand the main physical/special checks while keeping a decent Speed tier, and the Steel type finishes off the fast opponents that the Dark/Dragon attacker missed.
